Media and Marketing

While online tools are easy to use, traditional media such as newspapers, television, and radio is still used by many people for their news. By telling the people in those fields about your project, you're spreading the message even further. We understand that this may be a daunting task, so we've put together some templates for you to use.

Elected Officials

Each year, YSA seeks gubernatorial proclamations from governors across the country and works with Members of Congress to introduce resolutions celebrating Global Youth Service Day in both the U.S. House and U.S. Senate. By issuing a proclamation in the state or signing on as a co-sponsor to the House or Senate resolution, the elected official is officially endorsing GYSD and supporting their youngest constituents in their efforts to improve communities around the country. These people are in office to speak on your behalf, so let them know what you think is important! Follow the easy steps below to contact your elected officials and ask that they support the biggest service event in the world.

  • Find your governor, your U.S. Representative, and your 2 U.S. Senators.
  • Using the links above, find their main office phone number. When you call your governor's office, ask for the constituent relations staff or the staff person who handles ceremonial resolutions. When you call your U.S. Representative or U.S. Senator, ask to speak to the staff member who handles education, youth, or national service issues.
  • For governors, encourage them to issue a Global Youth Service Day proclamation. All proclamation requests have been submitted, so we just need you to call and/or email in support of it!
  • For Members of Congress, ask them to consider signing on as a co-sponsor to the GYSD resolution. In the House, it is being introduced by Representative Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut. In the Senate, it is introduced by Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.
  • After being connected to the right staff member, identify yourself as a constituent and explain the purpose of your call or email. In two to three sentences, ask them to sign on as a cosponsor of the GYSD resolution. Tell them how you're participating in GYSD and what is happening in your community on GYSD. Say why service matters to you (and why it should matter to them). Keep your message short and to the point.
  • If they're interested in signing on, they should contact Mike Man at YSA at outreach@ysa.org.
  • Be sure to thank them for their time.
