Repainting of Kisungu Road Zebra Crossing

Kizungu zebra crossing is faint and has become a death spot in the centre of Masaka City. Drivers no longer stop at this zebra crossing leading to rampant accidents that have claimed so many innocent lives mainly vulnerable children. On Global Youth Service Day 50 children from Lions Infant School will join efforts to re-paint this zebra crossing so that it becomes visible enough for drivers and pedestrians to observe. Children will then elect signs indicating zebra crossing and demonstrate to the general public how to drive and walk on a zebra crossing. The project will benefit over 200,000 using this zebra crossing per day.

Communities In Schools/XY-Zone Project on Disaster/Emergency Prepardness

14 middle school boys who are participants in Communities In Schools' XY-Zone group chose disaster and emergency preparedness as the fullfillment of their "Reaching Out" project. These boys were in the 1st and 2nd grade when they were forced to evacuate New Orleans because of Katrina. They remember the chaos for them, their families and neighbors. As we began to plan the project, the boys were keenly aware of the tragedies for the families in Haiti and Chile. In addition, early predictions for hurricane season were beginning to show up in the media. So, they decided they wanted to be sure that members of the community would have some tools to help them prepare for emergencies. We looked for activities that were happening during GYSD week, and found that the Young Leadership Council, a group of 1200 professionals, were featuring nonprofit groups at their spring concert series at Lafayette Square in the heart of New Orleans. These concerts are free to the public so they are usually crowded. The boys planned out what they wanted to focus on how they would communicate the information to concert attendees. They decided to focus on making sure everyone knew the emergency numbers to call both before and after an emergency happens. In New Orleans, you have to be sure you find out about the status of the roads because there aren't many ways to get out of the city. So, they had t-shirts made with the phone numbers on the back and wore the shirts to attract attention. They gave away flashlight keychains (because the power was out for a LONG time after Katrina) and they gave out refrigerator magnets with the numbers. More than 200 people stopped by the tent and listened to the boys give advice to be prepared!

Youth inside, helping them to hope in the outside

Are volunteer day targets are the youth held in prison at Kecskemét. Our experience is that one of the biggest problems of the prisons are that they are not organized continuously, meaning that they do not have a view how they will succeed outside the walls. Therefore our program is built on continous activity, that means that we would like to show the youth that there is life outside. We are organizing programs where they can feel the joy of something continous and physical activity.

Zouhour Sports Club /Hariri Foundation Volunteer Center: Drugs are your enemy ...avoid them!

Drug abuse and addiction do great harm. Addiction is no longer a problem affecting only the major western countries; it has become a domestic issue afflicting the whole of our own society. We must therefore contribute with all our means to protecting our children and our future civilization from this menace. Zouhour Sports Club has therefore organized a public awareness campaign entitled "Drugs are your enemy ...avoid them!" It has also, in coordination with the SKOUN Association for drug control, arranged for a trainer specialized in this area to give a lecture, discussing their theoretical and clinical experience in this area. Following the lecture, young people from Zouhour village will visit a rehabilitation center for juveniles in order to talk to young drug addicts about their experiences with addiction and its risks. In addition, as the center is not equipped with any means of fire protection, we will provide them with a fire extinguisher (and demonstrate its use) as well as a leaflet instructing them on ways to protect themselves in the event of a fire.
