The BIG Sweep is Volunteer Frederick’s annual county-wide beautification project that raises money for participating area nonprofits. Structured like a walk-a-thon, participants collect donations from family, friends and other supporters for their chosen nonprofit. Instead of walking, however, BIG Sweep participants pick up trash from Frederick County roadsides and dump sites. The 8th Annual BIG Sweep will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2009.

Who can participate in the Big Sweep?

ANY local nonprofit organization can participate in the BIG Sweep! Teams representing local nonprofit agencies, school clubs, youth organizations, civic organizations, churches and businesses have participated in the BIG Sweep. Participants can support their own organizations, or raise funds on behalf of other organizations!

What will Volunteer Frederick provide?

Volunteer Frederick coordinates the entire event!

Supplies - Each team receives bags for trash and recyclables, gloves, safety vests and signs, and a map of their assigned area. Those collecting $35 or more also receive a BIG Sweep t-shirt.

Training - BIG Sweep team leaders will have several opportunities to attend an informational meeting/workshop.

Promotion and Fundraising Assistance - Volunteer Frederick promotes the event to the media, corporations, businesses and citizens, provides marketing materials and a personalized fundraising website for each team. Participating nonprofit organizations receive at least 75% of funds collected and Volunteer Frederick receives the remaining percentage to cover materials and administrative costs.

Kick-off Breakfast and Supply Distribution - All participants are invited to attend a kick-off breakfast between 7:30 - 9:00 a.m. at Martin's Catering at the Walkersville Firehall on April 25, 2009. Supplies can be picked up during the breakfast, between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. or the night before, Friday, April 24 between 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Walkersville Firehall.
