SOS Haven Garden

The Semester of Service event that I am planning is learning about the importance of gardening and how being able to grow your own food creates a healthy sustainable living style, and that by growing a garden people are able to take responsibility for their work and help reduce waste and increase recycling in their lives. The project is set up as a 11 week lesson plan with each week being an isolated unit about gardening. If a youth comes into the program half way through they will be able to participate and not have to know what happened two weeks ago to be able to take part in that weeks lesson. Topics covered will include but are not limited to: the make up of soil, the differences between organic/inorganic farming, composting/ways to use recycled materials in gardening, what plants and produce grow well in the region, how to plot out a garden, and then rehabbing the garden space that is already in existence at the shelter.

Detailed Event Information
GYSD Event Dates:
Friday, April 24 (GYSD)
Saturday, April 25 (GYSD)
Specific Dates and Times:
April 24 3:00pm - 6pm April 25 9:00am - ? Whenever we get done. My project will actually be going on from now (planning phase, Feb. 23rd physical start date) till GYSD. My group will be learning about gardening and plotting out the rehabbing of a garden located at the women's shelter where I am working as an AmeriCorps.
Day-of Information:
Any volunteers I get will want to wear comfortable gardening clothes, and if you have your own tools that'd be great, I'd recommend putting your name on them with masking tape. We will be providing seeds, and tools as well. There will also be food and snacks to keep people happy. I cannot specify where the DTA stops nearby so as not to compromise the safe setting of the shelter. Any volunteers who would like to help me will be put through a basic background to check for histories of domestic violence
