Riverside Youth Council

Riverside is committed to increasing civic engagement through service in the community, and looks enthusiastically to the opportunity to make Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) the cornerstone of a larger effort to reinvigorate the city through service. Riverside's GYSD will comprise of a community-wide celebration of service, April 25, 2010, where youth will engage in meaningful service projects, enjoy fun exhibits, and delight in food booths. GYSD will give youth organizations the opportunity to display their group's service accomplishments by hosting booths featuring their service projects throughout Riverside Season of Service. Students of all ages, elementary to College, will have the opportunity to participate. As well, attendees will be invited to share in the culture of service by participating in booths featuring crafts and activities relating to service in three target areas: Opportunities to Help Others, Healthy Environment, and Effective Education. GYSD will be supported by an extended service campaign known as Riverside Season of Service which provides a distinct opportunity to harness the talents, leadership, grassroots mobility, ideas, and energy of Riverside's youth in meaningful volunteer opportunities. Riverside Season of Service will be launched on MLK Day, January 18, 2010 at the 16th Annual MLK Walk-A-Thon & Rock-A-Thon and run through GYSD. The launch of Riverside Season of Service will feature service organizations, youth clubs, and non-profits, showcasing ways for youth, and adults, to get involved during Riverside Season of Service. Youth will have the opportunity to pledge 10 hour of more of service. A key feature of Season of Service will be "Service Saturdays", a schedule of service opportunities on Saturdays throughout Season of Service. Riverside Season of Service taps into the creativity and commitment of young people over an extended period of time and brings synergy among community service efforts throughout Riverside.Contact Lizette Navarette, Youth Coordinator at lnavarette@riversideca.gov / 951-826-2436 Media Contact: Amy Soto soto.amy13@yahoo.com 951-826-5551
